Year 5 and 6

Welcome to Elm Class! We are a mixed Year 5 and 6 class. Miss George is the class teacher. We have two teaching assistants supporting in the classroom: Mrs Toplis works in the classroom on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and Mrs Carter works in the classroom all week.  Miss Goldspink will be with us in class on a Wednesday morning as well. We also have other people in to teach some of our lessons. Mrs Crawley, our Art specialist, teaches us Art and helps us to produce some wonderful pieces of work to display around the school. Our PE coach, Mr Wilson, teaches some of our PE lessons throughout the year and we learn a huge amount from him. We have visiting music teachers with opportunities to learn the guitar with Mr Murphy and the piano with Alex. This year, our year 6 children have the opportunity to contniue to learn to play the ukulele with Mr Murphy after a successful and enjoyable time learning the instrument as a whole class last year.

The Year 6 children work towards their SATs in May and are supported in this throughout the year with things such as: before and after school clubs, targeted revision work to do both in school and at home and general help and support to reduce any anxiety by learning good strategies and techniques to cope with the tests and  be able to do their very best.
Throughout the year, we work closely with the High Schools so that they can get to know the children who will be joining them when they leave at the end of Year 6. We take part in different activities at both Sir John Leman High school and Bungay High School where the children can get to know their new school and some of the staff as well.

We have many sporting events that take place throughout the year. After school clubs are run by our PE coach every week and the focus changes every half term so there will be something for everyone! We also have external providers to run after school clubs in order to provide the children with a wide variety of experiences in school. We take part in competitions which are organised by our North Suffolk Sports and Health Partnership where we compete against lots of other primary schools in a range of sports.

As a Year 5/6, the children have opportunities to take part in a variety of events throughout the year: Bikeability is for Year 6 children to learn how to ride their bike safely on the road with level 1 and level 2 worked towards, a residential trip to Aylmerton and a watersports trip allow the children to develop so many skills while having fun with their friends and Crucial Crew teaches the Year 6 about staying safe and we enjoy going every year.

Being the oldest children in the school, Year 5/6 can also take on more resposibility. They can become Junior Road Safety Officers and Sports Leaders to help both the school and the wider  community in different ways. They deliver an assembly each week in groups to teach the rest of the school about that half term's Christian Value. They design, make and run games at the Christmas Fair to help raise money, often raising over £100 which is an incredible effort. The Year 6 children run a carousel of PE activities as part of our whole school sports day where the other children take part and score points for their team.

Headteacher Reading Challenge

Mrs Allen has set a challenge for all children in the school. Here is a list of classic recommended books to read. There is a copy of each book in the classroom. We recommend INDIGO for year 5 and VIOLET for year 6. If your child is a reluctant reader you might like to look at the GREEN list - these books are full of fun and are designed to get children back into reading.

Our Christian Value Work

Our Christian value for this half term is SERVICE. We have completed work for our hall display based on a Bible Story.

Art Work - Printing

In Art this term, we have been printmaking in several different ways and achieved some amazing results. Firstly, we handled real seed pods and dried flowers and sketched them as a starting point for our ideas. We researched the artist Angie Lewin and were inspired by the way she takes natural forms and the landscapes around her to create contemporary art. We then did a press print and experimented with different layers of paper and colours underneath a black print. Lastly, we used reduction printing to explore three colour printing process, laying colours on top of each other.

Our Visit to Colchester Castle

As part of our History work on the Romans, we visited Colchester Castle to find out more about Boudicca, the reasons why she staged a revolt against the Romans and why she failed to defeat them. We built a replica of a Roman villa and an Iron Age roundhouse and compared them. We also looked around the museum at the artefacts and used them to ask and answer questions about life in Roman Britain. We had a fantastic day and learnt so much.

Year 5 and 6

Welcome to Elm Class! We are a mixed Year 5 and 6 class. Miss George is the class teacher and Mrs Toplis is the teaching assistant who works in the classroom on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with Mrs Kett in class on a Wednesday. We also have other people in to teach some of our lessons. Mrs Crawley, our Art specialist, teaches us Art and helps us to produce some wonderful pieces of work to display around the school. Our PE coaches, Miss Drake and Mr Wilson, teach some of our PE lessons throughout the year and we learn a huge amount from them. We have visiting music teachers with opportunities to learn the guitar with Mr Murphy and the piano with Alex. This year we are also going to be learning to play the ukulele with Mr Murphy.

After school clubs are run by our PE coaches every week and the focus changes every half term so there will be something for everyone!

After school clubs are run by our PE coaches every week and the focus changes every half term so there will be something for everyone!

Our Christian value for this half term is Forgiveness. We have completed work for our hall display based on a Bible Story.
