Outdoor Learning

We have been very busy with lots of activities in our outdoor area. We have been gardening and exploring the natural world, constructing, exploring phonics and maths, music, water play, the mud kitchen, physical equipment and small world.

Autumn Term 2

Week Beginning 2nd November 2020

This week for our Maths we have been learning about circles and triangles and their properties. We also read the stories 'Owl Babies' by Martin Waddell and the children thought of their own ending to the story.

The children have been getting creative and building vehicles using the wooden blocks and planks.

Week Beginning 9th November 2020

This week we have been making 3D models using recycling materials. We thought about how different parts could be joined together and the detail that needs to added.

We have continued our learning about circles and triangles and made pictures.

We have been learning initial sounds, how to segment simple words and how to write simple sentences.

We have been raising money for Children in Need and having fun with Pudsey activities.

Week Beginning 16th November 2020

This week we have been learning all about the number 4 and we finished our learning by recording objects and writing the numeral.

For our phonics we have been learning to hear and identify the end sound in words. We have also been writing simple sentences using our tricky word knowledge.

Some of the children have been interested in the world so we have been looking at maps and globes and thinking about where we have been on holiday.

In our RE session we have been thinking about the question 'Why do Christians Perform Natvity Plays at Christmas?' We tried on some of the costumes we wear when we perform the play.

Week Beginning 23rd November 2020

This week we have been busy looking after our garden. We weeded the flower bed and planted some more flowers, planted some herbs in the vegetable patch and dug up some of our potatoes.

For maths we have been problem solving to find one more and one less than a number using different resources both indoors and outdoors.

We have focused on learning our tricky words to help us with our reading and writing.

The children are very interested in farming so we found out about farming now and in the past.

Week Beginning 30th November 2020

This week for maths we have been learning about the 2D shapes squares and rectangles. We compared them to see the properties that they share and then looked at how they are different. We made the shapes out of lolly sticks, match sticks and pipe cleaners, created town pictures using the shapes and played a shape monster game on the interactive board.

We put on our suits and got wrapped up to explore the new forestry area. We looked at the pond that had been uncovered and we were excited to see a campfire and den. The hand washing stations were very funny! To warm up we had some hot chocolate whilst we talked about what we had discovered.

We had a party in our role play house and the children were busy writing invitations and party food lists. They used their phonics knowledge to have a go at writing independently.

Spring Term

We have been busy learning through the stories written by Julia Donaldson. They have given us lots of opportunities to problem solve, explore, imagine and be creative. The snow was very exciting too!

Science Week

We carried out various experiments in school and the children shared some from home. We learnt lots of new facts about how any why things work. Here are pictures of our volcano experiment, exploring magnets and finding out why water and oil do not mix.

Easter Holiday Challenge

The children had the challenge to create their favourite story, traditional tale or nursery rhyme. We will be using these to support our learning this half term.

Here is a selection of the wonderful creations.

Summer Term

We have had a very busy term. There has been lots of opportunities for consolidation and new learning with phonics and maths. Team work has given opportunities for peer learning. We have also particularly seen more engagement in creative and imaginative activities to support all areas of learning.

The Visitor

We were shocked to find giant footprints in our classroom and that Beaky our phonics puppet had gone missing. We investigated in the classroom and outdoor area but he could not be found. Our plan was to find out who the footsteps belonged to and how to make contact. After much thought and dicussion we came to the conclusion that the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk had magically got out of the small world castle and taken our beloved Beaky. We wrote letters to the giant and left them in the classroom hoping he would find them. The next morning the letters were gone and Beaky was trapped up high near the classroom window. The next thing we needed to do was to think about how to save him. The children decided together that because our caretaker Mr Lickman helps us in lots of ways, he could help us to save Beaky. We needed to write letters to Mr Lickman to ask politely and the children came up with ideas for how to get him down. Some of the ideas were to use a jet pack, a rocket, a beanstalk, a giant dragon fly and a ladder. Mr Lickman received the letters and together we decided a ladder would be the best option. We were so grateful to Mr Lickman! We never did find out why Beaky went missing but we are sure that the giant found the letters and decided to do the right thing by returning him to us.

Our Garden

We have been so busy in our garden keeping it tidy and looking after the plants we have grown. We are learning lots about how the plants keep healthy and the extra thing we can do to help them.

We harvested our leeks and cleaned them up to sell.

We have also been planting seeds to grow our own vegetables and herbs. Lucille has been helping us during outdoor learning sessions and we have been learning about different types of produce that can be grown at this time of year and this season. We have planted runner beans, potatoes, tomatoes, beetroot,  chives, rosemary, parsley and mint.
